Consideration by the Trump administration to redefine gender as a binary construct determined by biologic sex at birth is harmful, misguided, and lacks scientific integrity. Women in Medicine (WIM) strongly opposes the Trump administration’s attempt to further marginalize and target the gender nonconforming, nonbinary, transgender, and intersex communities. This position demonstrates a lack of scientific understanding of the difference between sex and gender, and ignores the lived experiences of millions of Americans. WIM believes that all gender and sexual minority people deserve the full protection of civil rights and anything less is a violation of our common humanity. To the gender nonconforming, nonbinary, transgender, and intersex communities, we stand with you. To our members, collective action has historically been integral to securing our safety and equity under the law as gender and sexual minority people. Now is the time to exercise our voice and advocate.
