Our Story

In 1984, San Francisco lesbian physicians, Lesley Anderson and Patty Robertson, organized the first conference for Lesbian Physicians: The “Women in Medicine Conference” or “WIM.”

Our first Conference took place in Asilomar, on the Monterey Peninsula in California. An announcement in the American Medical News (in an article by Sari Staver), drew 24 lesbian physicians from across the United States and Canada. Since 1984, WIM has grown in numbers and diversity, and now welcomes all lesbian, sexual minority, and gender expansive physicians, medical students and their partners to its annual conferences.

Our Mission

To engage an international community with accessible and comprehensive medical education resources that are inclusive of race and sexual identity.

WIM values cross-specialty continuing medical education, family-inclusive retreats, constructive networking and mentorship opportunities, as well as medical education made accessible by scholarships.

Our Team

Behind WIM is a board of 30 volunteer members elected for a three-year term. If you're curious to see our faces, visit our team page and get to know us!
